I have a Marlin 1895GS 45-70 rifle.......
I have installed a Kick-Eez magnum recoil pad.
Butt stock shell holder.
Wild West Guns light mount. For my Glock Tactical light.
Warne nickle 2 piece scope mount bases.
Leupold compact 2X-7X scope with Leupold quick detachable scope mount.
XS ghost ring back up sight when the scope is off the rifle.
I am getting 1960fps with 400gr jacket bullets and 420gr cast bullets.
I load Jae-Bok Joung 550gr Crater's @ 1600fps.
I use this gun and loads for when I'm prospecting for bear protection, or if I'm hunting in big bear country it is the rifle that I have with me when I pack game out. I also hunt with it when I'm hunting in heavy cover.
Anyone else here have or use Marlin 1895 Guide guns and if so how have you set them up?

Jeez Cam, those loads make my .454 Puma loads look small! 'Course they come in a larger, heavier gun (yeah, Tutt, keep telling yourself that...). I'm almost kind of sorry I didn't get a Marlin and have Mic convert it to .50 Alaskan or Kodiak Express except I just don't care for Marlin's that much. I ended up in the .45 LC/.454 camp largely because of some of the people involved (Mic McPherson, Paco Kelly, my mentor Steve, Ross Seyfried and others). Don't regret it much, but sometimes that .45-70 looks mighty good!

Yes these loads make a 454 Puma seem small but Tutt there is a place for your 454 Puma just like the empty spot in my safe waiting for one to fill it.
To be able to carry a small lever action rifle when I'm out with my 454 Ruger SRH would be fantastic. Not saying that it couldn't do the job but it would not be the rifle that I would carry when I'm in grizzly country. There are lots of areas that it would be the perfect gun for me though.
Don't regret not having a rifle that has better ballistics I'd suggest having both! That's my goal........

Just got back from Alaska. Got to go on my first hunting trip ever (for moose). We also did find some grizzly bear tracks in the mud. Never did find any moose, but it is only the first few days of the season and they are not in rut yet, so don't answer to calls. Anyhow, I'm still of the opinion that a punch bullet out of a Puma rifle is good bear medicine, but some may disagree. I also got to shoot my friends bolt action .375 H&H. What fun! I was seated at a makeshift table in one of those portable folding camp chairs. I was surprised that the rifle didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would. Come to find out, it was rocking me back in the chair! You gotta love that! Now, if they would just make one in a levergun....:-)

I have to download the pictures from my first digital camera. It is a 5 MP Sony digital camera similar to my friends, and most of the pictures look pretty good, although only a few will be relevant to the group(s). I'll get them out to you tomorrow for editing/resizing, 2gun! :-)
Thanks!

Last Nov I was talking to Kurt @ Boyd Gun Stocks when I was purchasing grey/black laminate stocks for my T/C Contender carbine and asked if they make a grey/black laminate stock for my s/s Marlin 1895GS. He said to call back later next year and ask because he has had alot of requests for 1895 stocks and would like to make them.
I called again this morning about this and the lady at Boyds took my phone # talked to Kurt then called me back. When she called me back she said that if I sent in my original 1895GS butt stock and fore end to them that Kurt would copy it and make me a set of 100% fitted/inletted Pepper (grey/black) laminate stocks for $90.00 exchange. I would only have to do the finishing touches on them.
Is this a good deal?

Sounds like a very good deal to me also. Price to purchase and have a synthetic stock intalled and fitted at WWG in Anchorage is $595. BTW, I'm new here, looks like a great forum!

I just installed one of WWG's Bear Proof Ejectors last night and was looking at their stocks again but couldn't justify them.
A fellow here just installed their stocks on his 1895GS. I'm buying his wood stocks so I can send them down to Boyd's but still have my gun in working order while I'm waiting.
Welcome aboard. This is a good site. Not to many active members but the few that post share excellent info.

That could be excellent for my light bullet loads as well as for my 22" barreled 45-70 T/C Contender carbine. I have been using Hornady's 300gr JHP up until now in the carbine.
I have been loading Alfa LeFrank 300gr spitzers for my T/C but have not fired many due to the lack of availability. I've been hoarding my limited supply.
Now if these bullets where available for use reloaders than I'd be one happy camper.

Cam, try these guys. I bet they make some kick-a## spitzer bullets, and they are available:
http://www.hawkbullets.com/Pricelist.htm
I plan on trying some of these in my McPherson/Tuttle Puma, but will probably have to load the spitzers one at a time for safety's sake. Awesome bullets for handgun hunting, though. The wound channel at higher velocities would be HUGE!!

P.S. I'm sure Hornady will come out with the bullets as a component for us handloaders, but it always helps to let them know directly! Now if they will just make a bullet in .452 for my Puma!!!!

Moki,
Thanks for the welcome! I'd be really interested in seeing pictures of the laminated stocks for your Guide Gun when you get them back from Boyd's. Hunting season weather in my area is usually very wet so almost all my rifles are fitted with synthetic stocks, except my Guide Gun. I'm interested in ordering a set for myself sometime in the near future.

My guns are now basically all s/s synthetic stocks except for my 1895GS.
I relate to your weather problems/concerns which is why I have made this switch as well.
Sure is nice having guns that I don't have to constantly clean and oil or worry about the point of aim shifting.
Oh, Doug your welcome for the welcome.......

I did meet with and purchase the stocks from the fellow yesterday. The stocks are actually brand new so I'm going to put these new ones onto my rifle and send my old ones to Boyd's.
Now I just need to get at it and send away.....

I forgot to mention that he brought his Marlin 1895 with him which has the WWG's stocks.
Very nice stocks but a lot of money for what your getting. He also mentioned that the stocks where extremely hard to work with. They do not come pre-fit or finished.
Her also installed a larger loop lever which he bought from Brownell's. It is not the WWG one and he paid about $125.00 US for it.
Now I'm also thinking about a larger lever.....

Cam,
I like the large loop lever.
Guess I watched too many John Wayne movies, and episodes of the Rifleman, not to mention "Wanted Dead Or Alive".
I put a large loop lever on my 20" 92 Rossi, and my older 18" 94 in .45LC.
Really looks cool twirling that 94 at the CAS shoots. The barrl on the 92 is just a little too long for me to twirl, so just spin cock it
Last year a friend and I installed large lever on his .35 Remintom Marlin 336 and did an action job. We both like the large lever on the Marlin.
One of the guys at the club has the larger lever on his 1895 and I like that also.
I don't have a large hand, but if I'm wearing heavier gloves, I have to take them off to comfortabely shoot my .45-70 or .444.
The large lever is easy to install, and gives you a good excuse to do an action job.
Only thing though, the large lever on the Marlin, doesn't look as cool as the large loop lever on the 92 and 94
It is functional though!!

Cam,
To me the carpeting looks great!!!!
I thought it WAS the new carpeting you were getting instead of of one of those nasty FA's.
I did not notice any stain, and Hoppe's # 9 just adds that certain something.
Hell, I use it for room deodorizer and have considered it as an after shave or cologne!
"She walked away mumbling something about pants....."
Why doesn't that surprise me any???
Good shootin',

Well guys it is time to restart this thread...
I never did get around to contacting Kurt @ Boyd's Gun Stocks again. I left voice messages in regards to the stocks but he never returned my calls.
I just found out that Davidson's Guns had Marlin make a limilted edition black/grey straight gripped laminate stocked Marlin 1895GS.
I called Marlin the other day to see if I could buy a set and they told me "NO" but never say never so I asked to speak to the boss and left a voice mail with him.
My wife recieved a return call yesterday stating that they could sell me a set so this morning I ordered my black/grey laminate stocks for my Marlin 1895GS.....
Yaaaa Hoooo....
I can hardly wait to get them....

Interesting. I noticed Walmart had the black/grey laminate stocks on a couple guns they offered too. Marlin certainly should be able to get you a set.
"Let me talk to your boss..." I've had luck at times with that, but not recently. Of course financial "institutions" shouldn't be compared to gun manufacturers.

Jeez Cam, you've been on quite the spending spree! First the shortened SBH, then the Crimson Trace grips, now the gun stocks. Am I missing something? I just got word from Mic that my BLR will be on its way home tomorrow after its NP3 plating and modifications. Looking forward to that. Meanwhile, I'll be taking the CZ 550 .375 H&H out on its maiden voyage this weekend with my first 300 grain and 350 grain handloads. Should be fun! Please keep us posted on your experiences!

Your telling me....
All of my money is now gone and I still have to move out of my gun room upstairs to make it into the babies room which has to be recarpeted, painted and redecorated before the baby is born and put all of my stuff into my exercise room which is downstairs.
I still have to buy a crib and dresser for the babies room as well. My wife has found which ones she wants and they are going to cost about $700.00 for the 2 pieces.
That's not including all of the stuff she has bought already. This last year & 1/2 have seen more money pass thru my fingers than any other time in my life.
But at the same time I have never been so close to having my firearms collection exactly the way I want it.
I still would love a 454 Casull lever action rifle and a maybe get my Bisley Vaquero's converted to 5 shot 475 & 500 Linebaughs.
Tutt that was a SRH not a SBH...

I went down to the States today and picked up my new Marlin laminate stocks...
Pulled them out of the packaging and thought these look awesome but the fore end seems to be thinner than my standard fore end.
I got home pulled my gun apart slipped the new butt stock into place started to put the fore end on and it isn't the right one this one is way shorter than the original and doesn't fit the barrel either.
I am assuming that this is a fore end for a smaller Marlin 336.
Called Marlin but they where already closed for the day. So I'll give them another call tomorrow to get this staightened out.
This is a real pain because it takes about 3 hours of my time and driving to get to the PO Box and back home.

Years ago I owned an 1895 45/70, and did lots of testing and experimentation with it. I took a very large buck deer with it using a 500 gr. Lee GC cast boolit. The deer didn't even slow that big slug down. About a year latter, I was hunting elk with the rifle, and the action locked up big time, costing me an easy shot at an elk. I was so disgusted that I sold the gun and bought my first Ruger .338 magnum, which has since killed three elk.
My Son bought a guide gun a few years ago, and I'm again involved in casting and loading for his 45/70.
I've have to comment on spending money for guns. What other item can you buy, enjoy for many years, and sell it for more than you spent?

Cam, sorry to hear your having such a hard time getting stuff to you as ordered. Man, that is so frustrating!! I'm also seriously disguted with your new Puma, and how it was delivered to you. Keep us informed. I really lucked out, as mine was a "hit or miss" order through my FFL dealer, and it worked out OK. But my buddy Tym brought a new example out of a store in AZ, and it split the stock within 3 shots if I remember correctly. And yours was DELIVERED already split. Now, thats got to be some sort of record. I hope you called up Legacy and ripped them a new one for that!!!!

Here are some options for picture resizing:
This first is a free software program that I really like:
http://www.irfanview.com/
This is a web site where you can do it on line.....you don't need to install anything:
http://snipshot.com/
Recently I've been using another free program I like better than Picassa:

Think about it . So you need the extra velocity ? The extra range ? The extra price ?
I am a person that shoots at targets and inanimate objects . I am not a hunter , though I have nothing against hunting .
I cast my own bullets so I can to shoot economically . And I do not load max loads In my Marlins .
I also have an origional Trap Door Springfiels . I load mild smokeless loads for it .
God bless Wyr

I tried out the GS using my 500 grain Lee bullets, one load at around 1200 fps., and another at about 1600. Whew, I had forgotten how bad that snaps your neck!
I recently ordered two new Lee moulds......the 405 gr. HB and the 405 FN. Hopefully the lighter bullets will be a little easier on the shoulder and neck.
I found it interesting that the higher velocity load hit 7" below the low velocity load at 25 yards.

I install Kick-Eez Magnum recoil pads onto all of my heavy recoiling rifles.
It is unbelievable the recoil absorbsion of these pads.
Totally recommend you take a look at them and "NO" Limbsavers are no where close in performance.
Congrates on the gun...

I have a 1895ss rifle that I had the barrel shortened to 16.25"s. It'll one hole at 100yds with 405 gr' ers @ 1,720 FPS. I've put a Leupold 2x7 atop and a Limbsaver out back. I've got plans for a big loop lever and thin the forearm a little slimmer while redoing all wood in an Old School oil rubbed finish. I had the AO sight system with a Scout set up for awhile.
Love the rifle.
