Here is an email response from Barnes on load data for their 200gr XPB bullets in a 454 Casull.

Hi Cam

Yes but there are limitations. The .451 cal 200gr XPB requires a minimum impact velocity of 1400fps for expansion. Because it is so new we don't have printed load data for its use in the 454 Casull.

You can use other published load data with X Bullets of the same weight, reducing the minimum and maximum charges by 20%. Velocity is a good guide when working up pistol loads. If you can use a chronograph and work the velocity up until you are about 100fps below listed load velocities, this would be your max load.

We Aim to please, reloading is a great hobby, enjoy it.

Subject: .451 200gr XPB in SRH 454 Casull?

Can the .451 200gr XPB bullets be loaded in my Super Redhawk 454 Casull and if so can you give me load data and availability?

Thanks

Cam

joining in this conversation late, but the XPB in 200gr is too long of a tapered nose to fit in typical 454 cylinders, as is the FTX....BUT!.. I did play around w/ the FTX and a razor blade and they work just fine. I loaded them up pretty stiff out of my Alaskan and I did lose the tip of the bullets nose but the body did hold together and mushroomed rather nicely. I'd imagine you'd have to slow them down out of a longer barrel, my chrono'd vel was 1502fps.

just thought I'd add, I'm using a SRH Alaskan, 2.5" bbl Using 36gr w296/h110 I'm getting 1502 out of it. "IF" you were able to seat the XPB and you were launching it at that velocity at ~35yds it's already at 1400. What I noticed is the 454 just doesn't do that well w/ less than 250 gr projectiles.
